    ICD-10 to ICD-11
    Changeover

    ICD11

Code for cause of death in Northern Ireland is carried out according to the World Heath Organisation’s (WHO) International Classification of Diseases, tenth revision (ICD-10). This classification allows the systematic recording, analysis, interpretation and international comparison of mortality data.

The latest version of the ICD, ICD-11, was adopted by the 72nd World Heath Assembly in 2019 and came into effect on 1 January 2022. NISRA, along with the Office for National Statistics (ONS) will be implementing ICD-11 into its mortality statistics. It was estimated that ICD-11 would be implemented in Northern Ireland in January 2021, but this has been delayed to January 2028 in line with ONS timescales.

The Vital Statistics Team in NISRA will be implementing this change and will be posting updates periodically on the NISRA website, within the Vital Statistics Newsletter and directly with users.

For more information on ICD-11 and why it is important, read this factsheet or check out this introductory video.

If you would like to be kept informed about this change or have any questions or concerns, please get in touch by emailing NISRA.
