Registrar General Quarterly Tables 2025 Quarter 3
The Quarter 3 (July to September) 2025 Registrar General Quarterly Tables were published on 29 January at 9.30am.
Key points
- The statistics show a provisional total of 4,196 deaths registered in quarter three of 2025 (Table 1c).
- At a high level there were 1,172 (27.9%) deaths due to cancer, 887 (21.1%) deaths due to circulatory disease, and 470 (11.2%) deaths due to respiratory diseases (excluding Covid-19 deaths) (Table 1c).
- Looking in more detail the leading cause of death for all persons in Northern Ireland in quarter three, 2025 was dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. This was also true for females but for males the leading cause of death was ischaemic heart disease (Table 7).
- The expected deaths for quarter three of 2025 was estimated at 4,451. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for quarter three of 2025 was estimated at -255 (Table 9a).
- The age-specific death rates show the clear relationship between mortality and age. Death rates range from 0.12 to 14.58 (deaths per 1,000 population of the relative age group) for age groups up to 65 to 74, however, the rates for age groups above are much higher, with 101.51 for 85 to 89 year olds and to 206.68 for those aged 90 and over (Table 6).
- A total of 2,654 marriages were registered in quarter three of 2025, and 21 civil partnerships (Table 1d).
- The number of births registered in quarter three of 2025 was 4,927. This is continuing the downward trend which has been observed for over a decade, despite a small increase in quarter three, 2025 (Table 1a).

Registrar General Annual Report, 2024
The 103rd Annual Report of the Registrar General was laid before the Assembly and simultaneously published at 9.30am, 20 November 2025. It contains information relating to births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships registered with the General Registry Office during the calendar year 2024. It also contains information on stillbirths, adoptions and re-registrations. It is available from the Registrar General Annual Report section of the website.

Suicide Statistics in Northern Ireland, 2024
Northern Ireland Suicide Statistics, 2024 report was published on 20 November 2025 at 9.30am.
Key points
- Over the revised series period covered by these statistics, the three-year average for registered suicides rose from 204.7 in 2017 to 220.3 in both 2020 and 2022, and 238.0 in 2024.
- Considering the trend based on the year of occurrence, for which 2023 is the most recent reliable year, the three-year rolling average of suicide deaths rose from 205.7 in 2017 to 234.3 in 2020, before falling to 228.0 in 2021, and rising again to 236.0 in 2023.
- Annually, numbers of registered suicides have fluctuated with 290 suicide deaths registered in Northern Ireland in 2024.
- As with previous years, suicide remains the leading cause of death in males under 50 in Northern Ireland. Of all male deaths registered in 2024 where the deceased was under 50 years of age (690),151 were to suicide (21.9%).
- 230 (79.3 per cent) of the 290 suicide deaths in 2024 were males and 60 (20.7 per cent) were females. The age-standardised mortality rate for males was 28.0 per 100,000 in 2024, while for females, the equivalent rate was 7.1 per 100,000.
- In 2024, when considering marital status, the crude suicide death rate per 100,000 population (aged 16+) was higher among those who were single (30.9), divorced (27.4) or widowed (18.7), compared to those recorded as married (9.2).
- In every year of the revised series (2015), more than 50 per cent of suicide deaths had a marital status of single.
- The age-standardised mortality rate for suicides in Northern Ireland has fluctuated since the start of the revised series (2015), ranging from 11.9 per 100,000 in 2016 to 14.3 per 100,000 in both 2018 and 2021, to 17.4 per 100,000 in 2024.
- The Northern Ireland 2024 age-standardised mortality rate of 17.4 suicides per 100,000 population was higher than the rate for Scotland (12.7 per 100,000 population) and England and Wales (11.4 per 100,000). It should be noted, however, that cross country comparisons will be affected by differences in data collection and collation processes in the separate jurisdictions.

Alcohol-Specific Deaths in Northern Ireland, 2024
Alcohol-Specific Deaths in Northern Ireland, 2024 was published on 11 February 2026 at 9.30am.
Key points
- There was a total of 397 alcohol-specific deaths registered in Northern Ireland in 2024.
- Since 2014, Northern Ireland has seen registered deaths due to alcohol-specific causes rise by 81.3% from 219 to 397 in 2024.
- Over the past ten years, the three-year average for registered alcohol-specific deaths rose from 223 in 2014 to 349 in 2023.
- Considering the trend based on the year of occurrence, for which 2023 is the most reliable year, the three-year rolling average of alcohol-specific deaths rose from 222 in 2014 to 367 in 2023, a series high.
- The alcohol-specific age-standardised mortality rate per 100,000 people was the highest on record in 2024 (21.4), up from 12.9 in 2014.
- The age-standardised mortality rate per 100,000 population of alcohol-specific deaths for males was almost twice that of the rate for females (28.1 and 14.9 respectively) in 2024.
- Almost two-thirds (64.5%) of the 397 deaths registered were male.
- Alcohol-specific deaths continue to be more prevalent among the 45-54 and 55-64 age groups, which together accounted for 59.4% of all alcohol-specific deaths registered in 2024.
- Belfast had the highest age-standardised mortality rate for alcohol-specific deaths of all Local Government Districts (LGDs) in Northern Ireland in 2024 (31.1).
- Between 2020 and 2024, the percentage of alcohol-specific deaths in Northern Ireland’s most deprived areas (36.7%) was almost four times that of the least deprived areas (9.9%).
- Across the United Kingdom, the most recent year with comparable data is 2023, Scotland and Northern Ireland had the highest alcohol-specific death rates, recording 22.6 and 18.5 deaths per 100,000 respectively. In contrast, England and Wales had lower rates of alcohol-specific deaths, with 15.0 and 17.7 deaths per 100,000 respectively. It should be noted, however, that cross country comparisons may be affected by differences in data collection and collation processes in the separate jurisdictions.

Deaths of Homeless People in Northern Ireland, 2024
The first publication on deaths of homeless people in Northern Ireland was published at 9:30am on 11 December, 2025.
This edition covers calendar years 2020 to 2024.
Key points
- There were an estimated 58 registered deaths of people experiencing homelessness in Northern Ireland in 2024, which was the same as 2023. This shows a decrease in comparison to the first year for which data is available (2020, 67).
- Belfast (local government district) had the highest number of estimated homeless deaths in 2024 (20). The estimated death rate of all homeless deaths in Northern Ireland in 2024 was 4.11 per 100,000 population aged 15 to 74. Across the 11 local government districts, the estimated mortality rate was highest in Derry City & Strabane (11.41).
- In 2024, 74.1% of homeless deaths were male and 25.9% were female.
- Just under half (46.6%) of estimated homeless deaths among all persons were under the age of 45.
- When looking at selected specific causes of deaths of people experiencing homelessness, drug-related causes were the most common, accounting for an estimated 27.6% of all homeless deaths in 2024 and 25.9% in 2023. For context, for all deaths in NI in 2023, the most recent year for which data has been published, deaths to drug-related causes accounted for 3.0% of the total.
